The city where planes are part of the scenery
In Santa Cruz, looking up is a show: aircraft descend over the sea and pass right there, heading for a runway that stretches out on pillars like a concrete balcony over the Atlantic. At first you always notice; after a week, you only notice when it's a new type. It's part of the city's rhythm, and it draws enthusiasts from all over Europe who come just to watch the landings.
Palm trees, pebbles and neighbourhood life
The seafront is the heart of it: a line of tall palms, Praia das Palmeiras with its rolled pebbles singing at every wave, and the municipal market just behind with the morning's fish and the season's fruit. At the market, the day's catch is in the hands of Mr António and Mr José, who know their customers by name; the fruit comes from Barraca do Joaquim, open for 48 years and now run by Joaquim's sons, Paulo and Eduardo. The sixteenth-century parish church is among the island's loveliest, simple Gothic, bare stone, a reminder that Santa Cruz is one of Madeira's oldest settlements.
In summer the Aquaparque fills with kids, and with grown-ups who swear they only came for the kids.
Living and buying in Santa Cruz
It's hard to find a more practical municipality: the airport on your doorstep, Funchal 15 minutes away, Caniço next door, schools, health centre and shops in the centre. On the property side that translates into steady demand, from families, frequent flyers and investors eyeing visitor accommodation, with prices per m² still clearly below Funchal. Apartments in the centre, houses up in Camacha and on the sea-view hillsides.
Not to miss
- The seafront at dusk, when the palm trees stand silhouetted against an orange sky.
- The municipal market early in the morning, fish still arriving, bread still warm.
- The drive up to Camacha, land of wickerwork and folklore, ten minutes away.
- A swim at Praia das Palmeiras followed by an ice cream on the promenade.
A local's tip
By the runway threshold, on the Ribeira da Boaventura side, there's a spot aviation lovers guard like treasure: planes pass overhead with the landing gear already down, so close the sound fills your chest. Bring something to snack on, sit on the wall and stay a while, it's free, and there's nothing else quite like it.
