A swim before work
One habit defines life in Caniço: walking down to Reis Magos beach early in the morning, swimming ten minutes in transparent water, and being at your desk by nine, in Funchal if need be, fifteen minutes up the expressway. That is the proposition here: the sea as part of daily life, without giving up the city next door.
Three Caniços in one
Caniço de Baixo belongs to the sea: terraces, discreet hotels and plenty of foreigners who came on holiday and never quite managed to leave. The town of Caniço, higher up, is where practical life happens: schools, supermarkets, the pharmacy, all within a walk. And Garajau is the residential area of wide views, with the Cristo Rei statue on the headland and, below it, the marine reserve that draws divers from across Europe to the cleanest water we have.
Buying a home in Caniço
Caniço has become the natural choice for people who work in Funchal but refuse to pay Funchal prices, and it shows in steady demand, from Madeiran families and foreign buyers in equal measure. There are recent apartments in town, houses with gardens up in Garajau and, ever rarer, homes with a completely unobstructed sea view.
Advice from the people whose office is here: in Caniço, the difference between a good buy and an excellent one almost always comes down to sun exposure and walking distance to the essentials.
Our tables and counters
- A TraineiraThe best the sea provides, served unhurried, with a wine cellar worth lingering over.
- Talho do CaniçoEspetada bought at the butcher's counter and grilled on the spot over a fire that never goes out; you eat wherever there's a seat, and that is the charm.
- A CentralFor those who prefer their barbecue quieter and more conversational.
On the calendar, the religious festivals and the onion festival fill the town with music, and the food stalls take care of the rest.
A local's tip
Save a late afternoon for the promenade between Caniço de Baixo and Reis Magos: half an hour on foot with the sea beside you the whole way, finished with a glass at one of the terraces along the way. If you're already planning the repeat on the walk home, that settles it: Caniço is for you.
